The global golf equipment market is approaching $7 billion and is expected to grow at more than 3% per year over the next 5 years. In addition to golf clubs, golf equipment includes a wide range of accessory products such as golf balls, shoes, bags, golf gloves, golf gear, golf wear, club head cover, golf carts, towels, tees, ball markers, GPS range finders, and other devices that help golfers in various ways. At nearly $4 billion, the golf apparel market is large and growing at twice the rate of the golf equipment market. Golf equipment and golf apparel present a unique set of merchandising challenges, particularly in golf shops. In today’s post we’ll take a look at a number of golf shop displays that work in this particular genre of specialty retail.
Most golf shops are space-constrained so POP displays are generally required to have relatively small footprints. Furthermore, golf shop sales tend to be more impulse-driven than destination-driven which means specific placement of the display in the shop is very important as is attention-grabbing branding and product merchandising. While it is important to stand out to capture impulse sales, it is also important to fit in with the décor of the shop which can be challenging with so many unique decors across the golf shop market.
One of the most common and highest utility golf shop displays is a simple golf club slatwall arm that can hang on any wall-mounted slatwall or freestanding slatwall display. Below is a picture of a custom version we made that is constructed of metal with injection molded plastic club holders and a branded endplate.
When it comes to world-class golf resorts, there might be none more beautiful that the Makena Golf and Beach Club located in Southwestern Maui, Hawaii. We made multiple fixtures for the resort’s golf club including the configurable shelving system that featured a combination of white washed wood shelves and apparel hang bars. This knock-down design was constructed using a metal tube frame with a brushed champagne powder coated finish which blended well with the shop’s luxurious décor.
Our next set of examples is for an up-and-coming golf apparel brand called Swannies. Unlike the Makena Golf and Beach Club, Swannies sells through a wide range of independent golf shops throughout the U.S. Creating attractive fixtures that have sufficient flexibility and carrying capacity to showcase their product line while also being able to fit in with many different golf shop decors was the primary design challenge.
The first fixture shown below is an adaption of our stock 4-WAY-EXT display. Designed to be shoppable from 4 sides, Swannies used this display to merchandise a mix of their headwear, hanging apparel, and folded apparel items. We created a wood boxed graphic header with screen-printed Swannies logos and added a matching wood base.
Headwear is an important part of Swannies product line so they asked us to create a 2-sided, adjustable cap display. We used a metal slotted frame with 10 sheet metal shelves and added a wood framed graphic header and matching wood base.
For larger golf shops that could offer more floor space, Swannies asked us to create an all-in-one high-capacity mobile gondola. We designed a flexible and highly configurable merchandiser that mixed wood and metal and featured adjustable shelves, apparel hang bars, faceouts, a framed header graphic, and permanent side branding.
Our next example is a small spinning counter display we made for GT Golf Supplies to merchandise its line of ball markers and divot tools. Constructed of solid wood with a rich walnut-stained finish and engraved logo, this display accommodated a broad mix of product SKUs while consuming a small amount of premium countertop real estate.
Sometimes simple is best. We created this minimalistic golf shoe glorifier for Payntr Golf’s line of performance and stylish footwear. It featured angled shoe shelves with matching black turf and a branded MDF base.
Our final two examples are the floor and counter displays we designed for Sky Caddie to merchandise its line of GPS range finders. Both displays are technically glorifiers since they feature the product but do not carry product inventory. Constructed of sheet metal with laser-cut logos and strong branding, these displays feature an angled product shelf, plentiful graphics, LED lighting and brochure holders.
